The grave lay on a mound very near to the beach. It consisted of skull-shaped stones that formed a large oval. Two sailors were groaning under the weight of a heavy, smooth, marble headstone that they were carrying.

‘Place it here, please,’ said Sara sadly, pointing to the righthand side of the Great Swordmaster’s final resting place.

Belch could see from her face how painful it was for her to remember her father. Good and bad childhood memories seemed to be swirling through her mind. What remained was the pain of the loss and the powerlessness at not being able to say any more what needed to have been said.

‘Father…’ Sara’s voice quivered with sorrow. ‘Karek…promised you a gravestone at this place. A gravestone with an inscription from me. It is here now.’ Sara knelt, kissed the marble, and read the simple engraving: ‘Here lieth Garemalan – warrior, father, human.’

She swallowed hard and fought back the tears. With limited success – as several of them rolled down her cheeks.

Child stood nearby and suffered with her. For those left behind, life went on. Child would comfort her. Nice, that they had found each other.

A murder of crows rose noisily into the air. Belch scanned the area – he didn’t want any unwelcome surprises. It was true that they were in Soradar, but they were still within Schohtar’s sphere of influence. Not seeing any signs of danger, Belch looked down again at the grave of the Great Swordmaster. He remembered him as being the first man that he had encountered who didn’t distinguish between Toladarians and Soradians. Both were the same as far as Garemalan was concerned – they simply served different masters. The second person in Belch’s life who looked at things the same way was still alive. His name was Karek Marein.

Belch rubbed his chin. Despite his humanity, the swordmaster had been a ferocious and dangerous enemy to those he had fought – this had been down to his loyalty to the king.

Sara got to her feet with a sob and stood beside Child. Belch knew that she’d had a troubled relationship with her father – unfortunately, any chance of a reconciliation had now passed.

‘Captain Belch.’ Sara had regained her self-control and was now looking at him. ‘Thank you for stopping temporarily by my father’s grave. I know how dangerous it is for you to drop anchor on the coast here – so close to Tanderheim.’ Her blond hair fanned out in the wind as her fingers played with the medallion hanging from her neck. ‘We should quickly make our way back on board and sail on.’

‘It has been an honour.’ Belch gave a little bow. ‘And I can understand your wish. Your father, Garemalan the Great Swordmaster was a respected man. A good man – even his Soradian enemies considered him so.’

If there was one thing that experience had taught Belch, it was this – life goes on! Well, at least until they all reached their final resting place - as Garemalan had done.
